The Hessdalen Lights and similar Unidentified Aeriel Phenomenon

Hessdalen is a small valley in the central part of Norway. Between 1981 and 1984, residents of the Valley became concerned and alarmed about strange, unexplained lights that appeared at many locations throughout the Valley. Hundreds of lights were observed. At the peak of this activity there were about 20 reports a week. No official institute with governmental support in Norway seems to be interested in these strange lights. Five individual researchers began their own research project in 1983 called Project Hessdalen. A field investigation was carried out between January and February 1984. 53 light observations were made during the field investigations. Lights are still being observed in the Hessdalen Valley, but their frequency has decreased to about 20 observations a year. An automatic measurement station was put up in Hessdalen in August 1998. According to Wikipedia the "Hessdalen Lights" are unexplained lights (a type of Will-o'-the-wisp ) usually seen in the valley of Hessdalen, Norway. These lights are well known and have been recorded and studied by physicists. One explanation attributes the phenomenon to an incompletely understood combustion process in the air involving clouds of dust from the valley floor containing scandium. Some sightings, though, have been identified as misperceptions of astronomical bodies, aircraft, car headlights, and mirages. However, many classify these lights as UFO's and they show very similar characteristics to UFO's seen around the world. Milton Torres - Ordered to shoot down a UFO

Here is an interesting interview Sky News did with Milton Torres. The story goes as follows:-

RAF controllers told US pilot Milton Torres to lock on and launch all 24 of his rockets over the city. But as he came within seconds of firing at the alien intruder — the size of an aircraft carrier on his radar — it vanished at 10,000mph. The amazing close encounter is revealed in secret Ministry of Defence X-Files which are declassified today. Milton said: It was some kind of alien snooping over England. I guess well never know what it was. The incident happened in 1957 when Milton was a 26-year-old US Air Force lieutenant based at RAF Manston in Kent. At 11pm one night he was ordered to scramble in his F-86D Sabre fighter to attack a bogey hovering above Norfolk. Speaking about it publicly for the first time, he said: I was told I would be firing a complete salvo, all 24 rockets. I was pumped up — this was the sort of thing that happened before a war. He got the UFO on his radar and closed for the attack at the Sabres top speed of almost 700mph — then it disappeared off his screen in a flash.
